IT is to be hoped sufficient funding can be found to build another replica of the original paddle steamer Comet constructed by the John Wood yard in Port Glasgow in 1812.
The replica, which was produced to mark the 150th anniversary of the vessel’s maiden voyage in 1962, stood in Port Glasgow town centre but fell into a dilapidated condition that led to her removal last week.
Some may not have been aware the replica had been fully operational. The vessel made a return sailing from Port Glasgow to Helensburgh during the 1962 celebrations.
Last week’s dismantling saw certain parts of the vessel, including her engine, saved and put into storage for possible reuse if a replacement can be created.
The accompanying images are of the Comet centenary celebrations in 1912, and show the parade travelling along Ardgowan Street and the original Comet Bar, latterly the Prince of Wales until its closure some years ago, at the foot of John Wood Street.
