THE sun shone on Fort Matilda Bowling Club at the weekend as players celebrated the opening day of the season.
The club kicked the season off on Saturday with members, sponsors and guests attending the venue on Newark Street.
Around 50 people joined in with the celebrations, with 30 of them playing on the day.
Five triples competed, and the opening bowl was delivered by Catriona Glen on behalf of president John Brady.
Speeches followed the Wappenschaw afternoon tea later in the day.
The club is open to new members, with secretary Norrie Mungin telling the Telegraph that its numbers have been increasing lately.
He said: “Just come in and try bowling. We are in no hurry to pin you down. The bowlers there will get you organised and take you through everything.
“It’s a friendly invitation rather than a ‘join now’.
“There’s been quite a number of ladies who have come in recently. A couple come in and then their friends come in too.”
The club also welcomed some new faces during its close-season in its recently revamped clubhouse.
As part of its efforts to engage members of the community, other groups from the area were welcomed to use the venue between October and March.
