A ROYAL Navy minehunter from HM Naval Base Clyde has arrived in Greenock.

HMS Penzance sailed to James Watt Dock this afternoon.

The vessel, named after the town in Cornwall, was guided in by two tugs.

The Tele enquired as to why she was visiting the town, but no reason was given.

A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “HMS Penzance has arrived in Greenock on a long-planned visit.

“When arriving or departing ports Royal Navy vessels are routinely accompanied by tugs.”

HMS Penzance was commissioned by the Royal Navy in 1998 and is the fourth vessel to bear the name.

The ship is part of the Royal Navy’s 15-strong minehunter fleet – which clear the way of mines to allow for the safe passage of larger forces.
