RANKIN Park Bowling Club gave the new season the green light by throwing a fantastic opening day for members and friends.

The club began the 2023 bowling season with its annual opening day, which included a wapenshaw and hospitality for those who came along.

Club president Callum Anderson invited his cousin’s son, Vincent, to get things under way by throwing the first bowl and jack of the season.

Local councillor Tommy McVey was also among those in attendance.

Ranking Park secretary Jackie McElwee told the Tele it had been fantastic to see so many people come along and take part in opening day.

She said: "It went really well and we had a great turnout. 

"Things have been plodding along nicely and we've got a few new members, we're always looking for more. 

"It was a lovely occasion.

"After the first bowl was thrown we had hospitality and food which was great for everyone who came along. 

"We've got a few things in the pipeline this season.

"We're hoping to hold our open fours again in July and are considering doing an Australian Christmas in June with a barbecue, weather permitting.

"The bank at the edge of our green collapsed and had to be repaired before the start of the searon and we were glad to get it repaired in time for opening day.

"We were sweating for a bit thinking we might have to set the green up the other way, but it got sorted in the end.”
