AN internationally acclaimed orchestra is set to perform in Greenock for the first time later this month.

The Scottish Nation Jazz Orchestra will take to the stage at the Beacon Arts Centre on Friday May 26, performing World of the Gods.

The show will feature music which ‘unites Orient with Occident’, as well as a 2,000-year-old musical tradition with contemporary improvisation.

Set to fill the Beacon with ‘a powerful sonic and visual spectacle’, World of the Gods was composed by SNJO artistic director Tommy Smith.

It was first performed in 2010, with the orchestra being joined by the Mugenyko Taiko Drummers.

Tommy said: “Over the past thirty years, Mugenkyo has become synonymous with performances that are strikingly visual and range from industrially powerful rhythms to delicately expressive sequences and have thrilled audiences from Glastonbury to Cork Jazz Festival to the Last Night of the Proms.

"World of the Gods is a project we've wanted to return to for some time.

"We're particularly looking forward to bringing it to the Beacon Arts Centre as it's the first time we've performed in Greenock, which is the birthplace of great jazz musicians including the late drummer Jackie Dougan and saxophonist Duncan Lamont."

Tickets for the show are on sale now on the Beacon’s website and from the venue box office.
