TRUSTEES of a cash-strapped community hub have been left 'gutted' after mindless vandals hurled a SLAB through their window.

The yobs struck at Port Glasgow's Riverside Club, formerly the Old Men's Club, after dark - causing hundreds of pounds worth of damage.

Club members arrived to find shattered glass strewn around the place and a CD player damaged as a result of the callous attack.

Trustee Stephen Kelly, 65, pictured, said: "We're pretty gutted, we weren't expecting this.

"Our club secretary, Tam Harkins, arrived in the morning and the place was just a mess.

"A lot of groups rely on this building and we don't get much funding."

Mr Kelly added: "I'm sure this will push our insurance up. We already had to pay £100 excess on our insurance and got the window boarded up.

"We're just waiting for an estimate to how much it will cost to repair it.

"It will cost us hundreds and every penny counts for us here."

Fellow trustee Stephen Murdoch said: "It's pretty sad. We're trying to do stuff here and we get a slab through the window.

"If someone had been in the building they could have been hurt because the couch is right next to the window."

Both men says the club is well used and they had to cancel a session by the Your Voice recovery group because of the damage.

Mr Murdoch, 50, added: "Syrian people come here on a Sunday so their children can learn English.

"We've been trying our best to get the place done up to a good standard.

"What's happened is just mindless. I think it's happening a lot of times at other places in the Port as well, not just our club.

"It's the way society's going."

The group say they have reported the incident to police.
