OUTRAGED residents have hit out online about careless drivers and the poor condition of roads in Greenock's west end following a string of car crashes in the town.

The area has recently been a hotspot for collisions, with two occurring last week – one at the junction of Forsyth Street and Newton Street last Tuesday and another at Finnart Street on Saturday.

The Tele told last week how ward four councillor Graeme Brooks had asked Inverclyde Council officers to probe the recent incidents.

Locals have taken to social media and attributed the spate of smashes to a variety of factors, including the perceived poor condition of road markings and surfaces, bad driving and widened kerbs.

Greenock Telegraph:

Commenting on Facebook, one user said: “The lack of road markings and the actual dirt and excess broken tar or tailings of tar that’s worn leave this as a hazard.

“Lack of cleaning of the roads doesn’t help and anyone that’s not from the area wouldn’t know half of these roads are give ways, as the trees obscure the signs or vans are parked at the signs.

“Is it any wonder there has been a vast number of accidents not just the past few months but the past few years? “

Several users felt that drivers were not taking due care while travelling through the west end and claimed to have frequently seen motorists driving at excessive speeds.

One user added: “People are driving without due care and attention in west end now.

“Caution has been set aside for those in a rush to get to their destination.

“Slow down before someone does not survive the next accident.”

Inverclyde Council recently repainted the road markings at Newton Street, but the local authority did not confirm whether the work was in connection with last Tuesday’s crash.

An Inverclyde Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of concerns about recent incidents within the area.

“As part of our ongoing inspection and maintenance across Inverclyde we are continuing with a prioritised programme of works to refresh the road markings, which will include these locations in Greenock.

“We are also progressing additional 20mph zones at a number of schools, including in the west end, and in village and town centres throughout Inverclyde.

“As part of our traffic calming policy, Newark Street and Union Street were prioritised in 2022 for additional traffic measures and will be present for public consultation later this year.”
