THERE is no need to have a large plot to grow some vegetables.

Even a small balcony can be enough to give a good yield for a single person or couple.

A few small lettuces can provide a light lunch and some herbs for salad dishes and maybe some spring onions plus a small cherry tomato plant can be very useful.

Add in a few beetroot plants and some strawberries for desert to end the meal.

All these can be grown in a few small pots or troughs and kept on a balcony.

I can recall an elderly lady in the west end of Greenock who entered the annual garden competition regularly and she had pots of small vegetables on her kitchen window sill.

All she did was open her kitchen window when she needed something for her cooking. A great idea and what fresher could she get.
