VOTING is now underway as Wemyss Bay bids for a spot in the semi-final of the World Cup of Stations – but you’ll have to be quick.

The train station has been shortlisted in Rail Delivery Group's competition, which aims to find Britain’s best loved rail stop.

Wemyss Bay is one of 48 stations chosen to take part – cut down from 100 nominations from across the UK.

It was selected as part of rail historian Tim Dunn’s ‘bonus group’, alongside Glenfinnan, Bishopstone in Sussex, and Lancaster.

Voting opened at 9am this morning and will close at around 11pm tonight.

The winner of the group will go on to face the victors of the North West, Scotland, and Wales regional categories in semi-final group three on Thursday. Voting has already taken place in other regions to determine the make up of groups one and two.

The station which comes out on top will then go into the final, against winners of the other two groups, on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Friends of Wemyss Bay Station said: "We think the station is one of the most beautiful stations in Britain, we have an active volunteer group of about 20, who run the bookshop 6 days a week, and put on an amazing flower display every year.

"It's a national treasure, we were recently voted 34th best station in the world by an architectural organisation. We hope people appreciate it and want to vote for it."

Designed by James Miller for the Caledonian Railway in 1903, the station is known for its sixty-foot clock and circular glass roof.

To cast your vote, go to Rail Delivery Group’s Twitter poll, or visit its website. The group result will be announced tomorrow.
