WEMYSS Bay station has been chosen as the UK's best-loved rail stop after receiving thousands of public votes.

The iconic Inverclyde travel hub saw off rivals from across the UK to be crowned champion in Rail Delivery Group's World Cup of Stations.

After almost a week of public voting, Wemyss Bay reached the final round of the competition yesterday, where it faced off against Denmark Hill and Leamington Spa stations.

It received 8,400 votes in the competition's final round and was announced as the winner by Rail Delivery Group this morning.

A total of 48 UK stations were shortlisted across 12 regions at the start of the competition, whittled down from 100 nominations by railway historian Tim Dunn.

The Scottish shortlist featured Kilmarnock, Nairn, Pitlochry, and North Queensferry – with Wemyss Bay securing a spot in Tim’s bonus round.

The Wemyss Bay line opened in 1865, with the station being designed by James Miller in 1903 for the Caledonian Railway.

Its interior became renowned, thanks to its sixty-foot clock and circular glass roof.
