A NEW public drinking water fountain has been installed in Gourock following a campaign by a local councillor.

The Scottish Water facility - one of nearly a hundred across the country - is located on the walkway between the train station and Kempock Street.

Councillor Lynne Quinn, who had lobbied for the installation, said: “I think the tap is fantastic. It’s going to be a great addition to Gourock.

"It’s in an ideal location with lots of footfall and I’m certain it will be well-used by locals and tourists alike.

“All people need to do is remember their refillable water bottle so they can top up from the tap and hydrate on the go.”

Three out of four people in Scotland now carry a water bottle when on the move, negating the expense and environmental impact of buying bottled water.

With 93 Top Up Taps now installed at a variety of locations across the country, Scottish Water says they are having a positive impact of reducing plastic waste.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs manager in the west said: “Since the launch of our first Top Up Tap back in 2018, our taps have helped save the equivalent of 4.5 million 330ml plastic bottles - it’s a phenomenal amount.

“We can all continue to help protect the environment by carrying a refillable water bottle and topping up from the tap when out and about. It’s that simple.”
