MORTON boss Dougie Imrie believes his team overperformed against expectations last season.

The Ton chief has been a huge hit on the Tail O' The Bank since his arrival in December 2021.

He initially steered the club clear of relegation and then missed out on second place last season by a single point.

Imrie says he he's been left with a sense of pride with what his side were able to achieve last term.

The boss believes his team deserves credit for their fifth place finish given the financial muscle of some of their rival clubs.

He told the Tele: “The aim was to finish eighth and we achieved that and kicked on to finish fifth in the league.

“If you look at the teams who finished above us, they should’ve been there. If you look at the teams who finished below us, arguably they should be above us too, simply going off of budgets."

Imrie says he will continue to do the best he can for the club and reckons the secret to his success is having the self-belief to continually drive himself on and picking up knowledge from his career as a player.

He told the the Tele: “I've worked with some great managers and I’ve worked under some equally bad ones.

“Everyone works in a different way.

"At the end of the day, if you do the best you can do and believe that you’re doing the best for the club then you don’t doubt yourself."

Imrie has now challenged his players to dust themselves down and get ready to go again ahead of pre-season beginning in two weeks.

He has retained a nucleus of last year's squad and feels he has the right balance of talent and work ethic to kick on once more.

Imrie said: “If you have a team who believe, and work for one another, then anything can be achieved.

“We showed that for the full season - I had a group of boys who’d run through a brick wall for each other.

“If you’ve got that then you’re halfway there. We have also got quality players here too who maybe by rights shouldn't be playing for Morton, but for whatever reason they are.

“So we’ve got to capitalise on that by regrouping and going again this time around and we’ll see where it takes us."
