ONE could be forgiven for thinking there has always been a BMW 3 Series since the German company started making cars.

That is not the case but the model does go back to 1975 when the E21 version was launched.

The 3 Series is now in its seventh generation and the saloon and Touring (estate) received styling and technology updates last year.

Pictured is the 330e M Sport Touring which costs from £49,285. The car shown is a rear-drive model but drive to all wheels is also available.

The 330e is a plug-in hybrid with an electric range of up to 37 miles. Emitting just 36g/km, it delivers tax benefits for company car users.

Luggage capacity of the hybrid Touring can be extended from 410 litres to 1,420 litres. The tailgate’s window opens for the convenience of loading smaller items.

Accommodation is good front and back.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0 four-cylinder petrol engine and the 330e is rated as producing 288bhp. All 3 Series models have an eight-speed automatic transmission that is pleasing to use.

The hybrid is claimed good for 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and more than 140mph.

I found it a delight to drive and felt I was part of the car. The hybrid M Sport does not have the uprated suspension of other M Sport variants but that would not trouble me if considering a purchase.

The BMW 330e Touring’s trip computer suggested I returned 37.5mpg overall. Drivers who can regularly charge the battery for electric running during a journey will obviously do better than this.
