A ROYAL Navy war ship was spotted sailing up the River Clyde this morning.

HMS Defender was captured passing Port Glasgow as she headed in the direction of Glasgow.

Built at BAE Systems in Govan, the Type 45 destroyer was launched in 2009 and is the eighth ship to bear the name.

Type 45s, also know as Daring-class, are said to be the 'most advanced warships ever built'.

They are used to a range of tasks, including hunting down pirates and providing humanitarian aid.

HMS Defender's primary role is to provide the fleet with air defence using the Sea Viper anti-air missile system.

With a range of up to 70 miles, the Royal Navy describes the Sea Viper as ‘a force to be reckoned with’.
