Charlie told the Telegraph he came up with the idea to take the strips out with him after speaking to Louise Newman, a Gourock Pool regular who frequently fundraises for good causes.

He said: “This is a great opportunity to learn about another place and help people in the process.

“Louise got in contact with me to help me make this appeal for football shirts, I want to go out and do more than just build the schools and play areas.

“I thought it would be good to take football shirts out there for the young children who don’t really have much.

“The ideal age range would be from around five to 16 years of age but anything would be a great help.

“The children out there have virtually nothing so for them to even have a playing top or a t-shirt on their back would be something they’d be thankful for.

“I think getting a football shirt would make their day, they might not even get to see professional teams that often.

“To get something like that with a bit of meaning and sentiment would do the world of good for them.

“We’re taking out stationery and the like, but this would be something that will never run out and that they can keep forever.

“I’ve never even been abroad before so to take myself out to a different part of the world and see a new life and a new perspective is something I think will change me.

“I want to thank everyone for the support I’ve been given, I was overwhelmed by the support I got from local businesses and the community in Inverclyde.”
