MORTON have snapped up a new striker with the arrival of former Hamilton Accies and Inverness forward Steven Boyd on a two-year contract.

The 26-year-old former Celtic youth product is a player that the Ton chief Dougie Imrie knows well, with the pair having spent four years as team-mates at New Douglas Park, where Boyd made his first strides into first team football.

He made 45 appearances for Accies between 2015-2019, with a highlight of his time there a blazing free-kick in a Lanarkshire derby against Motherwell at Fir Park, and he was soon awarded with a new contract.

But he eventually left the then-Premiership club in pursuit of more regular football and that came at East Fife, where he found the back of the net three times in nine games.

The tricky forward then spent time at Peterhead and Alloa before making the switch back into full-time with Inverness last summer, penning a one year deal with Billy Dodds' side.

Boyd made 33 appearances for the Caley Jags, half of which came alongside current Morton front man George Oakley.

He netted once, helping the Highland outfit on their way to a sixth place finish in the Championship and in their run to the Scottish Cup final.

The forward, who can be deployed anywhere across the front line, becomes Imrie's fourth new signing of the summer after Kirk Broadfoot, Calum Waters and Ryan Mullen all joined earlier in the close season.

Boyd is the fourth former Accies player to sign up under Imrie since his appointment eighteen months ago, after club captain Grant Gillespie, the aforementioned Oakley and Ali Crawford, who had a loan spell at the club midway through last season.

He said: “I’m pleased to have signed and I’m delighted to be here.

"To have signed on a two-year deal is great as well, it really gives me time to properly settle in.

“I know the gaffer well from my time at Hamilton and he was keen to bring me in when I left Inverness.

"I’m also familiar with a number of the boys, which will be a massive help with settling in.

"I was at Inverness with George [Oakley], and I know Jai Quitongo as well as a number of the other boys here.

“My experience at Premiership and Championship level will hopefully help out on the park and I’m looking to make an impact on the team as much as I can with goals and assists and just putting in hard work to help the club the best I can.”

Meanwhile Tele understands that there are a host of trialists still in training with the club ahead of the start of the new season.
