PEOPLE gathered at Gourock War Memorial to remember hundreds of local men who died during the WW1 battle of Achi Baba.

Fought as part of the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, it claimed the lives of around 300 Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders from the town, from the 4,000 who died.

This year members of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Inverclyde Branch, Gourock Community Council and former town councillor Jim Hunter laid floral tributes to remember those who fell on July 12, 1915.

Former soldiers Leonard Cole, Billy Brown and Robin Docherty, paid tribute as part of the Argylls.

Robin said: "It is important to remember Achi Baba and everyone who fell during the war."

Jim said: "The Gourock Argylls were wiped out.

"I remember when I first came to live here in 1975, people who had lost family came to lay flowers.

"One woman had lost her brother, he had only been 15 when he enlisted, he said he was 17 and was a drummer boy."

Hamish MacLeod, chair of Gourock Community Council, said: "The sacrifice all the armed forces made and the mistakes made during the campaign should never be forgotten and we should learn from the mistakes."
