FED up tenants in a Port Glasgow street claim will be forced to live with an access road that is falling into disrepair and properties with water pouring in unless home owners foot their share of a repair bill.

Greenock Telegraph: Benclutha residents call for action from RCH

Previously, we reported that emergency vehicles are unable to access Benclutha with one tenant having to walk to an ambulance when he fell seriously ill with Covid.

But River Clyde Homes told the Tele that they cannot take any action because home owers in the street - who would have to pay a share of the bills - will not give the go-ahead for any work to go ahead.

Fed up John Stanton, aged 63, said: "They said they had a programme of works for Benclutha but that was five years ago and I have yet to see it.

"The access road is mess, the bushes are overgrown all year.

"I think River Clyde Homes should be able to do something. They don't even cut back the overgrown hedges properly.

"One of our neighbours fell because of a pot hole, it is not good enough.

"Absolutely nothing has improved since we first highlighted this. They don't do the repairs.

"They were planning to resurface but they sent bills out for £2,000 to the homeowners and that was the end of that.

"But we need a decent road for people to come in and out. They come once a year to trim the hedges but they need cut right back."

John who has suffered heart attacks and now has long covid previously told how he had to walk to an ambulance during the pandemic because the paramedics couldn't get to his door.

His neighbour Archie Napier, aged 71, has to put buckets in his living room every time it rains.

He said: "It is caused by the guttering, but it isn't even coming in the windows, it is through cracks in the walls.

"They never do anything but they are quick enough to take our rent.

"Our rent has increased by hundreds of pounds and so has our council tax but we can't walk up our road safely or keep water from coming into our houses."

River Clyde Homes admitted there is a problem with the access road in the Port Glasgow street and the properties.

Greenock Telegraph:

An RCH spokesman said: “We fully understand the concerns raised by our tenants regarding the access road to Benclutha.

"Our team visited the site early this year, identified and costed the necessary repairs with a sub-contractor.

"We do not own all the properties affected, and therefore cannot instruct works to renew the road without all parties being in agreement.

"As factor, we have consulted with the other owners to obtain consent for these works, unfortunately we have not received the necessary votes to proceed.

"Likewise, in relation to the water ingress issue, we have been unable to commence repairs we proposed to address this, as we have do not have the necessary permission from co-proprietors in the property.

"Home Fix Scotland Grounds Teams have cut back the hedgerow twice this season and will continue to maintain the area as necessary.

"We will continue to engage with owners to try and find a solution to the problem areas, and we apologise to our tenants while this process continues."
