A DOUBLE-assault thug who knocked a Greenock supermarket security guard unconscious and left him severely injured won't be sentenced until a sheriff has seen CCTV footage of the violent incident.

Lawman James Varney has postponed disposing of the indictment case against Roddi Lee Stewart - who was on bail at the time of the attack at Tesco - after hearing that the victim had his head slammed to the ground.

Stewart, 37, had originally been charged with attacking the man to the danger of his life at the Dalrymple Street store, however, this allegation was removed from the indictment following discussions between defence lawyer Aidan Gallagher and the Crown.

Stewart pleaded guilty through Mr Gallagher at the sheriff court to assaulting the man and his colleague during the afternoon of November 12, 2021.

He struck one worker on the head to his injury, as well as pushing the other on the body, seizing him and throwing him to the ground causing him to lose consciousness.

Prosecutor Raeesa Ahmed said: “The witnesses had cause to speak to the accused and approached the him.

“There was a verbal exchange and the accused began to act aggressively, punching one witness to the right hand side of his face, causing his glasses to fall off.

“He turned to retrieve his glasses and at that point, the other witness attempted to block the accused from running from the store.

“The accused then pushed him to the chest before pulling him over the shoulder and slamming him to the ground, where the witness struck his head rendering him unconscious.”

An ambulance was called and the second security guard was taken to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for an assessment.

A doctor later confirmed that an examination revealed a ‘haematoma overlying his occipital region’.

The other guard was given an ice pack for swelling to his eye but refused any other medical treatment.

Miss Ahmed told the court that the incident was captured on the store's CCTV.

Stewart pleaded not guilty to further charges of stealing a quantity of food and breaching a bail condition to attend Greenock police station on set days and times, and this was accepted by the Crown.

Sheriff Varney told Stewart: “You will appreciate that this is a solemn matter.

“I am going to call for a report before I decide what to do.”

He also asked the Crown to provide the CCTV footage of the assault at the next calling.

Stewart is due to return to court for sentencing on October 18.
