A WOMAN charged with ill-treating a now deceased infant baby who is said to have ingested cocaine is set to stand trial at Greenock Sheriff Court.

Shereen Mains, 34, of Port Glasgow, maintained pleas of not guilty through lawyer Aidan Gallagher to four indictment charges at the latest calling of the case.

She is accused of ill-treating the tot during a three-month period and exposing the baby to controlled drugs.

It is alleged that Mains 'caused or procured the infant to be ill-treated in a manner likely to cause them unnecessary suffering or injury to health' by consuming or allowing others to consume substances whilst the baby was present.

The Crown further claims that Mains exposed the baby to controlled drugs, namely cocaine, whereby the tot is said to have ingested the class A drug.

Mains is also alleged to have been in possession of cocaine, cannabis and the class C benzodiazepine phenazepam at the same property in the Port between June and September 2019.

At the latest calling of the case, Sheriff James Varney confirmed that a jury trial, which is expected to last five days, will begin early next year.
