THE paddle steamer Waverley enjoyed one of its best seasons ever in 2023 - and the famous ship's operators have thanked everyone who contributed to its success.

Passenger numbers rose by 50 per cent compared to last year, according to Waverley Excursions Ltd (WEL).

The ship's 2023 season drew to a close with a weekend of Clyde cruises on October 14 and 15 - and WEL have wasted no time in announcing the start of the Waverley's cruising programme for 2024.

A spokesperson for WEL said: "Waverley's 2023 season has come to an end and what a season. We would like to thank each and every one who helped make it the outstanding success it was.

"Passengers, supporters, donors, volunteers and our fantastic crew have all helped make 2023 one of the best in almost 50 years of preservation.

"2023 was Waverley's most ambitious season for at least a decade and it didn't disappoint with passenger numbers up by more than 50 per cent on last year."

The first sailing of 2024 will take place on Friday May 17, with the first Glasgow to Oban sailing on Monday May 20.

A spokesperson added: "The 2024 season will have broadly a similar outline to 2023.

"We are planning to include the south west for a short period of time to further broaden Waverley's operating areas.

"This will see the ship return to Plymouth and other south-west ports and piers."
