KIA are celebrating the 30th anniversary of their global and UK best-seller’s introduction.

More than seven million examples of the Korean brand’s Sportage SUV have been sold since 1993.

Greenock Telegraph:

UK dealerships received the Sportage two years after its world launch.

Nearly 385,000 have gone to buyers here, and it is currently the UK’s fourth most popular new car with more than 32,000 sold this year.

I hold the Sportage in high regard and have previously mentioned a member of my family has had two examples from new without experiencing a single niggle.

Kia’s reputation for reliability is backed up by one of most generous warranties offered. It provides cover for seven years/100,000 miles.

The fifth generation Sportage was introduced last year, marking the debut of a plug-in hybrid version with a claimed electric range of up to 43 miles. All other models are mild or full petrol hybrids.

Prices start at £29,345 for the 1.6 157bhp manual in ‘2’ specification and rise to £45,745 for GT-Line S 1.6 248bhp plug-in hybrid which has all-wheel drive (AWD).

I recently had a short spin in a front-drive GT-Line S 1.6 full hybrid which has a maximum output of 226bhp. It costs £40,645 and has a combined cycles economy rating of 48.7mpg. An AWD version is available for £42,245.

The Sportage is likeable to drive, has a decent ride and I’ve found long journeys can be covered without wear and tear on the person behind the wheel.

In full hybrid form it will get from rest to 62mph in about eight seconds and has a claimed maximum speed of 120mph.

Passenger accommodation is good and the boot capacity is a noteworthy 587 litres.

Features of the GT-Line S include a panoramic sunroof, suede leather upholstery, and heated front and rear outer seats with the former also ventilated.
