IT may be freezing outside in the run-up to Christmas but talented teens at a Gourock school will be 'walking on sunshine' to spread some festive cheer with musical pantomime next week.

Pupils from St Columba's High School in Gourock will be including the feel-good hit when they stage their version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

The audience will be treated to all the fun of a traditional panto, as well as some contemporary songs.

Greenock Telegraph:

Drama teacher Lynsey Mitchell, who is directing the show, said: "It's going really well, everyone is working together to make sure the show is a success.

"There's a real buzz about performing and it's important to get the chance to share this in the wider community and school.

"The show is very traditional with all the panto elements, goodies, baddies and audience participation alongside modern songs such as Walking on Sunshine, Kiss the Girl and I need a Hero."

Greenock Telegraph:

Graham Currie, history and modern studies teacher at the school, who is responsible for the technical side of the production, said: "We have pupils from S1 to S6 involved both on stage, backstage and in technical roles.

"Some of them are studying drama as part of the curriculum but it's open to everyone.

"It's been good fun. It's the third panto we've staged, only interrupted by Covid. Pupils get really invested in the show, they love it."

Young people from all year groups are taking part in the show and have been busy rehearsing for the last two months.

Both Graham and Lynsey are no strangers to performing themselves.

Graham said: "It was 31 years ago when I did my first panto with Greenock Players.

"It's good to share my experiences, it's a unique set of circumstances with Lynsey in the school as well."

He added that it is very much a whole school show.

Graham said: "Lots of the S1s were in the audience last year when they came with their primaries and this year they get the chance to be part of it.

"We have 65 pupils taking part and they've given up a lot of their own time and have been very committed to the rehearsal process.

"The school has been very supportive to allow time to devote to the show to make it as good as it can be."

The pantomime runs on Wednesday and Thursday at 7pm.
