A PORT Glasgow shoplifter who stole alcohol from the town's main supermarket has been told to stay out of trouble before he is sentenced for the offence.

John Shovelin stole a quantity of alcohol from Tesco on June 22 last year and pleaded guilty to the charge at Greenock Sheriff Court last week.

The illicit haul, worth £60, was not recovered.

Shovelin, 45, was said to have a 'fairly lengthy' criminal record during the hearing, with theft offences marked as a 'recurring theme'.

His solicitor Gerry Keenan told the court Shovelin, of John Wood Street, is currently subject to a community payback order (CPO) which is due to expire in February.

Mr Keenan said: "He has responded well to supervision and seems to be on top of his problems."

Sheriff Clair McLachlan deferred sentence to March 6 for Shovelin to be of good behaviour and for him to complete the CPO.
