Readers have shared their memories of a well-known Greenock nightclub following news that Red is set to be auctioned off later this month.

The venue is located on Cross Shore Street and has attracted a minimum opening bid of £145,000.

The bidding starts on January 22 and is expected to close by the next day.

Once a favourite local hangout spot, the news of the nightclub's auction earned reactions from Facebook users who shared their fond memories of their times there.

One person said: "Best times working here, and don’t forget all the nights out too."

Another added: "Loved the dug out, great nights in there."

Another chipped in: "Miss my Red Fridays and Saturdays, it was depressing when got too old to go."

One person said: "So many memories. The owners being the best part. A proper club that I felt at home in whenever I went. Ended up working there at one point too!"

It has been a favourite for decades, with one readers remembering: "Cathcart was a great wee club in the 70s and 80s. Me and pals in the queue waiting to get in used to take turns going into the Anchorage pub across the road for a pint, had to buy a case of cans as it took ages to get served. Jim Devenny was the DJ."

For some people, Red has even played cupid.

One local said: "Met my husband in this venue when it was called Cats Pyjamas. Had many a great night in there when it was Cathcart too."

Another added: "Best club ever! Made so many friends for life, from being a punter to bar staff and met my partner there and here we are 10 years later.

"Although I never will be able to smell sambuca again without boaking."

The nightclub was put up for sale around six months ago for nearly £200,000 but has now landed on the auctioneer's hammer.

Mandi Cooper, managing director of Auction House Scotland, said: "I am excited to highlight the exceptional rarity of this opportunity for entrepreneurs in the bar and nightclub industry.

"This property holds a special place in the hearts of the Greenock community, and its enticing pricing is tailored for a quick and advantageous sale."

Red holds a capacity of over 400 and sits across from the James Watt Bar. Before it was Red, it was a hotspot in the 1990s known as The Dug Out.

The agents who are marketing the sale described the venue as a 'rare commercial opportunity'.

The location is centrally positioned in the centre of Greenock and the venue includes a main dance floor, bars, a variety of seating areas, essential amenities, an outdoor smoking area and a sound system.

The previous refurbishments have also equipped the place with new fridges, flooring, and lighting.

The premises license is transferable, making it a valuable opportunity for enterprising spirits in the bar and nightclub business.

These enhancements, along with security features like CCTV, security alarm, and a roller shutter, completes the comprehensive package.
