A MAN charged with inflicting severe injury in an alleged glass attack is set to face a jury following previous doubts over his fitness for trial.

Martin McGrath is said to have permanently scarred a man with a piece of broken glass in an attack at Holmscroft Avenue in Greenock in April 2021.

It is claimed the 49-year-old repeatedly struck the man on the body with a shard of glass to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.

Co-accused Kathleen McHugh, 44, is charged with initially assaulting the alleged victim.

The pair appeared in the dock at the town's sheriff court last week to maintain their innocence.

At an earlier calling of the case McGrath's solicitor, Aidan Gallagher, said there was a "question mark over whether he is in a position to provide instruction" following a recent diagnosis of Korsakoff syndrome.

The neurological condition, commonly caused by alcohol misuse, has memory loss as one of its main symptoms, and Mr Gallagher previously said McGrath's "cognitive abilities have been impaired quite significantly".

Representing McGrath, lawyer Gerry Keenan told the court the defence team are awaiting a psychiatric assessment in light of his recent diagnosis.

Sheriff David Pender continued the case to a further hearing on February 12, before a scheduled trial a week later.

McGrath, of Ann Street, and McHugh, of Mary Street, continue to deny the allegations on the indictment.
