A LOCAL campaign group is hosting an outdoor screening of a unique film in Gourock tomorrow night to raise funds to help Palestinian people affected by the war there.

Group for Gaza Inverclyde is showing a film which has been made in Inverclyde in a bid to raise funds for the Medical Aid for Palestinians organisation.

Greenock Telegraph: The short 10-minute film was made to coincide with the run-up to International Women's Day 2024 and it features images from the painting and drawings of Palestinian artist Malak Mattar.

Mary McGlashan from the Group for Gaza said: "We were honoured to be given permission to use Malak's paintings.

"Her colourfully vibrant images depict the woman of Gaza - as young women and mothers - and make us reflect on how perilous their lives are now in the war-torn Gaza Strip."

Malak was born in Gaza and turned to painting in watercolours to help her cope with the ravages of war. Throughout her young life she has lived through four wars.

Group for Gaza member Morag Paul, pictured with fellow campaigner Karen McFadden, who visited Palestine in 2016, says the film aims to put human rights in the spotlight.

Karen added: "We want to show solidarity with the people of Palestine. We stand for justice, human rights and freedom."

Music for the piece has been especially composed by local musician, Yvonne Lyon.

The film will be shown at the space on Kempock Street between the Sainsbury's store and the Cafe Continental premises from 7-8pm and organisers say everyone is welcome to drop by.

Group for Gaza holds a vigil every Saturday at 2pm outside the Oak Mall and has already run two successful events in aid of Palestinian people.

Thanks to generosity shown by people in Inverclyde, it has already raised nearly £3,000 for MAP and a further collection of coins and cash will be taken at the screening.
