TALENTED youngsters from a Greenock secondary school are in full cry after taking home a truckload of trophies from Inverclyde Music Festival.

Dozens of Notre Dame High youngsters brought home first and second in class awards from the annual gala, which over 200 pupils from the Dunlop Street school participated in.

Greg McGonigal, principal teacher of music, told the Tele he was delighted with the efforts of his pupils.

He said: “The representation from Notre Dame is always outstanding and the young people have outdone themselves.

“They’ve done brilliantly to get so many firsts and seconds in their classes of course, but everyone who took part was excellent and performed to a really good standard.

“The festival is a great platform for our young people to take part in, not only to show their music skills but also to support each other.

“I think it’s a really nice thing to be able to see people from other schools as well as your own school.

“We’re so proud of everyone andpleased to have been part of the festival once more.”

Among the school’s many successful pupils was sixth year student Mark McDonald, who was given three second in class awards for musical theatre singing, foreign language singing and the string solos class.

The 17-year-old said he was glad that the school gave him the opportunity to take part.

He added: “Through the school we take part in the school choir and do voice, which ties in with the whole Inverclyde Choir setup, and then there’s also the school orchestra, the school string group and Inverclyde string group.

“I’ve been doing music since I started playing cello in primary five.

“The festival gives us the chance to take part without having to pay for it themselves and the school makes sure we can get to and from the town hall, so there are plenty of opportunities.

“We get a lot out of it.”

His comments were echoed by fellow pupil Olivia McCabe, who picked up a trophy for her fantastic vocal performances.

She said: “I was in the festival last year for the first time.

“I really enjoy it and getting the chance to sing for people.

“I was nervous at first but once I got past that it was great.

“It’s really exciting to get the chance to take part in something like this.”
