INVERCLYDE'S MSP says he fears for the future of the RBS/Nat West Mortgage Centre in Greenock following the announcement of up to 30 jobs being shed.

Stuart McMillan is seeking an urgent meeting with Nat West bosses to discuss their future plans for the site.

But the SNP man is also calling on the UK Government, as major shareholders in the bank, to act.

He said: "After the [recent] BT/EE closure news, I’m concerned about what this might mean for the future of the mortgage centre in Greenock.

“The UK Government are still the majority shareholder in Nat West and they have an important part to play with regards to these job losses and securing the future of the mortgage centre.

“Ronnie Cowan MP and I are seeking an urgent meeting with Nat West, who now own RBS, to put questions to them about whether this will involve voluntary or compulsory redundancies, and what their plans are for the centre going forward.

“This is hugely disappointing news and my thoughts are with the staff affected by this decision."

The MSP said he is also speaking with the new Scottish Government economy secretary Màiri McAllan on the issue.

He said: "We need all levels of government to work together to bring additional employment and investment to the area.”

RBS have blamed customers switching to digital services for the job losses. They told the Tele that they have no plans for more redundancies or to relocate at this time.
