INVERCLYDE'S MP has signed a no confidence motion in the House of Commons speaker after chaotic scenes during a heated debate on Gaza.

Ronnie Cowan was one of over 50 MPs to put pressure on Sir Lindsay Hoyle after he broke with protocal to allow a Labour motion to proceed ahead of one from the SNP.

The SNP had used an Opposition Day motion to call for an end to the 'collective punishment of the Palestinian people.'

But Mr Cowan has slammed The Speaker for instead taking what he says was a 'weaker' Labour amendment.

He said: "I have signed the motion of no confidence in The Speaker because his actions in breaking with convention and the advice of his own clerks led directly to the collapse of the SNP's Opposition Day motion.

"My colleagues and I were denied the opportunity to vote on a matter that is of grave concern to us and one which we have tried to raise at every single opportunity.

"This vote would have been crucial in bringing pressure on the UK government to use its international influence to stop the assault on Gaza."

He went on to say that the farce which played out in parliament was irrelevant to the 'misery and death that is continuing to be played out in Gaza'.

He said: "It has to stop and it has to stop now.

"Civilians are being bombarded and being denied food, water and medical help."
