A COMMUNITY group focused on the environment has been recognised for its 'significant contribution' in Inverclyde.
A motion congratulating Literati Guide to Inverclyde and its volunteers for their work to keep the area clean and tidy received unanimous support at a meeting of the full council.
It comes a matter of weeks before a series of litter picks, planned by the group for the length of the local coastline and surrounding areas, is due to kick off.
They will take place between March 15 and April 28 as part of Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Spring Clean 2024.
Councillor Martin McCluskey, who brought the motion forward, said: "Many of us across this chamber will have taken part in litter picks with the Literati group over recent years.
“They do a great job of keeping the area clean and obviously are supported by our own council waste services team to make sure the many bags of rubbish that they collect get to where they need to be.
“The scale of what they’ve achieved in the recent past is significant. In 2023 they had 741 people take part across 102 events, collecting 1,086 bags of rubbish.
“So far this year alone, just since January 1, they’ve collected almost a metric ton of litter across Inverclyde.
"We would hope that people would take their own litter home, but for as long as it remains a problem, I’m glad that they are here to do the job that they do.”
