ADVENTUROUS youngsters from a Gourock school headed to one of Inverclyde's most scenic spots for a day of outdoor learning.

Pupils from St Ninian's Primary visited the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre at Cornalees and learned about everything from making a fire in an emergency to baking bread.

Boys and girls in P5 and P6 got the chance to talk to park rangers Mike Holcombe and John Maclean.

The young people enjoyed the amazing scenery around the site and took in plenty of fresh air on a cold and windy day in Inverclyde.

Ranger Mike spoke to the young people about the materials that can be used to make a fire in an emergency situation, and ranger John helped pupils make bannock, a type of bread made from flour and milk.

Alongside learning about skills needed for the outdoors, pupils learned about the importance of caring for the environment.

Class teacher Judith Erskine said: "The pupils absolutely loved it.

"It's great for them to be outdoors in all weathers and doing something different.

"The outdoor learning activities link to the curriculum and complement their learning in other subjects."

Park ranger John added: "This is some fun for the young people to do outwith the school.

"We're really enjoying working with Active Schools on all of the different activities."
