TODAY'S image from the past paints a picture of how Greenock developed as a port.
It shows the former Mid Quay which I understand was completed around 1710.
Identifying where an old photograph was taken can be difficult but not in this case thanks to it showing the Victoria Tower.
William Street can be seen running down to the Mid Quay.
I cannot say when the image was taken but it shows the former James Watt Memorial College, the building still standing today at the corner of William Street and Dalrymple Street, which was officially opened in 1908.
In 1922 the Greenock Telegraph reported that work to fill in the Mid Quay and the adjoining West Harbour had started.

TODAY'S photo flashback dates back to 1982.
This scene gives an idea of the amount of rock which had to be removed to create the most westerly section of the dual carriageway from Langbank to Port Glasgow.
