PEOPLE across Inverclyde are being encouraged to play their part in helping to sustain a precious natural resource.

Scottish Water's new campaign - Piped by Us, Owned by You - aims to build a greater awareness that water belongs to the people of Scotland.

The company wants people to show appreciation for tap water by using it wisely, and treating it as their own.

Scottish Water has invested millions of pounds across Inverclyde in recent years. The firm channelled £2.5million into a project to address the regular flooding of the A8 through Greenock.

Greenock Telegraph:

Works included installing a new combined sewer overflow underneath the council's Pottery Street depot, and upgrading the local sewer network.

A total of £6.9m was also invested at Loch Thom reservoir. The works included installing strengthened embankments to protect against climate change and risks including flooding and erosion.

Bosses at Scottish Water say climate change will continue to affect the pipe network across Scotland.

The 'Piped by Us, Owned by You' campaign reinforces that on average, people across Scotland use approximately 180 litres of water every day, and that only one per cent of the rain that falls across Scotland is captured in Scottish Water reservoirs.

Clare Smith, head of campaigns and marketing at Scottish Water, said a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to keep water flowing from 'hilltop to tap'.

Clare added: "We know that when people feel a sense of ownership in the product and essential services we provide, they are more likely to use it wisely and look after the environment we all strive to protect.

"We want everyone to feel a sense of ownership and take pride in this vital asset."
