PUPILS and parents at Ardgowan Primary were taken all around Europe in just 30 minutes as part of a continental cracker put on by the school’s primary sixes.

The Greenock school’s gym hall was taken over by the youngsters, who used it to stage an array of exciting European-themed activities for their parents and peers to enjoy.

These includes quizzes about European foods and flags, food tasting sessions, Greek dancing much more.

The European showcase capped off weeks of in-class learning about the continent, which saw the pupils hold debates about major issues such as Brexit and the European Union.

Class teacher Catriona Anderson told the Tele she had been very impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the children.

She said: “Through the curriculum we cover different aspects of the world, primary one start with Greenock and the surrounding area and we work our way up through the school until the whole world.

“In primary six we learn about Europe and the countries that are involved, we talk about Brexit and the European Union and how we’ve left that.

“Today we’d usually have an assembly but instead we wanted to get the parents in and get other staff in.

“We’ve invited six classes to come and experience Europe in half an hour.

“We’ve had a very immersive experience and it allowed them to see some of the things they’d experience if they went and visited some of these countries.

“The pupils have got to share their learning from the classroom and bring it to life.

“It gives them a real-life experience of these things, so it isn’t just about learning places on a map, it’s about using that knowledge to help teach other kids about the subject.

“They get so passionate about it and it’s wonderful to see.”

Ardgowan Primary pupil Toby Gilmour, 10, was one of the pupils who had helped organise the event.

He said: “Normally in our school every class has to come up with an assembly on a specific topic, but we decided to do this instead and I think it’s worked out quite well.

“I’ve enjoyed having everyone else come by and look around everything, it’s a good feeling to know other people are learning.”

Fellow pupil Daisy Thompson, 11, added: “We’re doing this to encourage people to learn about Europe and let them have fun.

“I’ve learned loads of stuff and really enjoyed getting to try the food and do some of the dancing.”
