THE Tail O’ The Bank Credit Union is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary at an event this week as it looks ahead to a merger.

The union opened its doors in 1984 when a group of like-minded volunteers including local minister Rev Ian Fraser wanted people to have access to fair credit.

Initially called Greenock East Credit Union and later becoming Tail O’ The Bank, over the last four decades the team have helped over 7,000 people in Inverclyde access and manage their finances.

Over the 40 years, the not-for-profit organisation has been a constant pillar within the local community, working to tackle loan sharks and educating junior savers on the importance of savings through its ‘Inversavers’ initiative.

Sandra Wilson, chairperson, said: “We have championed for affordable credit in Inverclyde for 40 years, offering not just loans, but ethical and affordable ones.

"The directors have put in a lot of effort over the past year to secure our future growth which will see us merge with Right Way Credit Union in April."

To celebrate the milestone the credit union are having an open day which will take place on Wednesday March 27 in their office at 24 Kilblain Street from 9.30am–1pm.

They would like to invite all members/staff/volunteers past and present to come down to the office to look back and toast the future.
