A GREENOCK credit union is looking to a bright future under a merger deal after celebrating 40 years at the heart of its community.

Tail O’ The Bank (TOTB) Credit Union recently welcomed members, volunteers and staff – both past and present – to an open day at its town centre base to mark the occasion.

The organisation was created by a group of like-minded volunteers, including minister Rev Ian Fraser, back in 1984 with the aim of providing locals with access to fair credit.

Since then, the credit union has worked to tackle loan sharks, educated youngsters on the importance of savings through its ‘Inversavers’ initiative, and brought people together.

People who have used the service over the past four decades came together at the Kilblain Street office to celebrate the anniversary and catch up over tea, coffee and cake.

Office manager Alan Gray said: “We were expecting a good turn out and we got it.

“It’s nice to get people back in that have been here over the years, contributing so much and making our credit union what it is today.

“It’s good to see them connecting again.”

TOTB currently serves around 3,000 adults, as well as managing 2,000 junior accounts.

The branch is due to merge with Right Way Credit Union in Paisley – a move which Alan says will be ‘beneficial’ for members.

He added: “There’s going to be more online services.

“It’ll be a lot more accessible, but we’ll still be here and open for our members.”

Sandra Wilson, credit union chairperson, said: “We have championed for affordable credit in Inverclyde for 40 years, offering not just loans, but ethical and affordable ones.

“We are committed to offering our members peace of mind as they navigate their finances.

“The directors have put in a lot of effort over the past year to secure our future growth, which will see us merge with Right Way Credit Union this month.

“Right Way Credit Union shares our values, focusing on outstanding member service and financial stability, making them the perfect partner for this exciting transition.”
