A FLOODING hotspot in Greenock has been fixed after the council carried out a major clearance project.

Councillor Tommy McVey was made aware about the Hole Burn overflowing following the extensive flooding in the area back in December.

The independent elected member contacted council officials and asked them to step in.

A project has now been successfully completed to tackle the problem, with a build-up of debris which was choking the watercourse now safely removed.

Councillor McVey, pictured at Rankin Park, which the burn runs through, said: "It had been brought to my attention that the Hole Burn had overflowed and water was running down Dunlop Street, Bow Road, Grieve Road and further out toward the West Station.

"I raised the issue with council officers and I am pleased that action was taken to clear out the burn with a digger.

"This should reduce the risk of flooding in future."

Councillor McVey says he wants to thank the bosses who dealt with the issue so swiftly.

He told the Tele: "I know there had been an issue with several burns at that time and the council had been dealing with them.

"Over the years the burn had become clogged up with silt, debris and branches. The period of wind and heavy rain that we had just exacerbated the problem and led to the flooding we saw."

Mr McVey says that while Inverclyde has well-documented issues with flooding extensive work is being carried out to address this.

He said: "It's an ongoing process."

Since the clearance work was carried out at the Hole Burn there has been no repeat of the flooding, but Cllr McVey says the local authority has will be monitoring the situation closely.

He said: "I want to thank the council for working in all the burns that are susceptible to flooding.

"This hopefully will give the public some reassurance that we are on top of the issue."
