A CHURCH in the heart of Greenock is set to celebrate 200 years in the town this weekend.
St John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, on Union Street, will mark the big milestone on Sunday May 19 with a special service starting at 11am.
Diocesan Bishop, The Rt Revd Kevin Pearson, will be leading worship and all who wish to join in with this special occasion are invited to come along.
The first Episcopal Church building went up in 1824 and was replaced in the 1870s with the current structure.
It is well-known locally as a beautifully maintained building with many unusual and lovely features in its stained glass and wooden carvings.
All are welcome at the service but the congregation and Rector have extended a special invitation to anyone who may have had a family connection with the church, such as a wedding or baptism, to join them and the Bishop on Sunday morning.
Historical artefacts and records will be on display, reflecting the church's many years of service to the town.
