AN INTOXICATED driver smashed his car into multiple parked vehicles in Port Glasgow before attacking a female police officer and shouting racist and homophobic abuse.

Kyle Watson - who has an 'extensive criminal history' and has been jailed several times - is behind bars again today after a sheriff rejected a plea from his lawyer that he is 'not a lost cause'.

Watson, 29, tried to kick the police officer on her head and verbally abused hospital staff after causing extensive damage to the cars on the Port's Castlehill Avenue.

He has received a total custodial term of 16 months after appearing at Greenock Sheriff Court for sentencing on eight charges.

A prosecutor told how Watson - who was also involved in a brutal group assault on a prisoner at Low Moss jail in 2019 - failed to keep proper control of a Vauxhall Corsa at around 8pm on November 12 last year.

He caused his car to strike two parked vehicles on the street, causing one to turn 90 degrees and roll into the driveway of a property.

The impact caused the second parked vehicle to strike a third car and Watson was seen by a witness to throw a bottle of alcohol over a hedge into a garden after the collision.

The procurator fiscal depute said: "Police attended around 20 minutes later and observed four cars to have all suffered severe damage.

"Around 9pm the same night a taxi driver flagged down officers stating that he had a male in the back seat who was not responding to him and was in pain.

"The accused identified himself and had multiple visible injuries. He was slurring his words and police detected a strong smell of alcohol."

Watson freely stated that he had 'crashed my car' and he was cautioned before swearing at a police officer and calling her a 'cow'.

Fifteen minutes later an ambulance arrived and Watson was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley after telling paramedics that he had taken valium.

The fiscal depute said: "He began shouting and becoming verbally abusive towards hospital staff and police, stating 'I will smash you when I get out of here'."

After being asked to provide a blood sample for alcohol analysis, he replied: "No, you're not getting anything from me."

The aggressive lout then tried to kick a PC on the head but it landed on her shoulder, and he told her to 'go back to your own country', before mocking her Polish accent and hurling homophobic abuse at another officer when fast straps were applied to restrain him.

Watson was also convicted of breaking a shed window at an address near to his Shore Street home in November last year and breaching curfew conditions a week after they were imposed, and again in March this year.

Solicitor Bob Mitchell said his client 'had a tragic early life and came out a very damaged young man'.

The lawyer said: "He turned to drugs and alcohol and those have been the things that have blighted his life ever since.

"Almost inevitably that led to offending and offending of various types.

"Kyle Watson is not a lost cause although he has committed serious offences.

"We have reached a point in his life where he does appear to want to address his problems.

"I would urge the court to give him that final chance rather than just return him to custody."

Sheriff Anthony McGeehan said that whilst he recognised Watson's difficult upbringing, he had been given chances before but had failed to take them and custody was the only appropriate disposal.

As well has his 16-month jail term, Watson has also been disqualified from driving for 20 months.
