A GOUROCK family are set to host a charity football match to raise money in memory of their late son.
Kieran Cameron passed away suddenly five years ago after collapsing at the age of 22.
The chemical engineering graduate had just completed his Masters degree and was set to go on to study for a doctorate.
Sister Colette Cameron, along with parents Pamela Brown and Steven Cameron, first organised the Cameron Cup in his memory in 2019 to raise money for Asthma UK.
This year, a team from Cleats in Gourock – where Kieran worked part-time – will take on Blackthorn Rovers’ Saturday side at Battery Park on June 23.
All money raised on the day will go towards the purchase of virtual reality headsets for patients at Ardgowan Hospice.
Colette said: “We are delighted that after delays due to COVID and other issues out of our control, we can finally bring back the Cameron Cup to get together to remember Kieran while raising money for important charitable causes.
“As someone who enjoyed gaming, we know Kieran would have loved the idea of us all supporting Ardgowan Hospice in purchasing VR headsets to enhance patient well-being.
“As someone who currently works at the Hospice, I know the difference VR headsets will make for the mental wellbeing of patients spending time in our Inpatient Unit.
“For example, over Christmas I had many conversations with a man who loved to scuba dive and struggled most with the fact he was no longer able to spend time in the water.
“Another patient told me during one of our conversations before she died how she regretted never going on safari.

“By having VR headsets, we will be able to help patients enjoy their passions again and experience things they never had the chance to - albeit in a more unique way.”
Colette thanked those who have supported the match so far, including Blackthorn Rovers coach Calum Hill whose team have offered to cover the cost of the pitch.
Referee Kevin McDermid will donate his fee back to the hospice, as will musician David Laing and band The Beatons – who are set to perform at Cleats after the game.
Nico’s Pizzeria has also offered to provide free pizza for the players involved in the match.
Colette added: “Thank you to Brendan McEleny for helping me secure the pitch for the date I wanted, to those who have already donated raffle prizes and to Stevie and Tony the owners of Cleats bar for their support.”
There is an optional donation for entry to the match, which will kick off at 12pm.
On the day, there will be a tuck shop and extra fundraising activities at Battery Park, as well as at Cleats afterwards.
