BOSSES of popular supermarket have earmarked their Greenock store to be a part of an expansion plan worth £1.6billion.

Bosses have confirmed plans to open 80 stores across 2026 and 2027 to meet the UK’s growing demand for affordable groceries.

They say money will also be spent on upgrading existing stores and on the development of distribution centres.

The retailer currently has 1,060 stores across the UK and has previously announced plans to scale to 1,500 locations.

Aldi chiefs have confirmed that they will spend an estimated £42m in Scotland over the same two year period.

This investment will see Aldi bring new stores to Bishopbriggs and Dumbarton, whilst current locations, including Greenock, are set to receive upgrades.

Plans include alterations to its the branch’s car park and an expansion of its sales area from around 1,000 square metres to almost 1,400 square metres.

According to proposals submitted back in April new customer toilets are set to be added, as well as improved facilities for staff.

Five electric vehicle charging points and seven extra parking spaces will also be created.

Aldi UK and Ireland Chief Executive Giles Hurley said: “Shoppers are still finding things difficult and that’s why we’re staying laser-focused on doing what Aldi does best - offering customers great quality products at unbeatable prices.

“Nobody else is making the same commitment to everyday low prices – no clubs, no gimmicks, no tricks - just prices our customers can trust and quality they can depend on.

“Since we opened our first UK store more than 35 years ago, we’ve brought high-quality, affordable groceries to almost 800 towns and cities, but there are hundreds more communities that don’t have an Aldi nearby.

“We’re more determined than ever to meet that demand, and that’s why we’re investing a record £1.6bn over the next two years, to bring Aldi prices closer to millions more customers.”
