THOUSANDS of meals were provided to those in need over the festive season in Inverclyde.
Aldi donated 4,769 meals by giving surplus food to local charities across the area, including Branchton Community Centre, Inverclyde Homeless Forum, and The Ark on the Clyde CIC.
The donations included fresh and chilled items and were part of Aldi’s nationwide scheme, which has been running in partnership with Neighbourly since 2019.
Luke Emery, national sustainability director at Aldi UK, said: "This Christmas we were proud to support so many incredible charities across the UK who provide essential support to those in need.
"The services provided by food banks are more important than ever in the current climate, especially over the festive period and we're committed to ensuring those that rely on them have access to a wide range of high-quality foods."
The scheme collects unsold food from stores after early closures on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve and delivers it to nearby charities.
Neighbourly, the community giving platform, found that four in five charities said demand for their services had risen over the past six months.
It predicts demand for foodbanks may rise by nearly 30 per cent during the colder months.
Aldi also made it easier for shoppers to give back through its partnership with The Salvation Army and InPost Lockers.
Customers were invited to donate warm clothing and unwanted Christmas gifts at designated InPost Locker donation points at Aldi stores.
Aldi works with Company Shop Group to redistribute surplus food from its regional distribution centres.
