Driver banned after crashing into cars while under the influence

Grant Watters, 27, admitted to driving at ‘dangerously excessive speeds’ on an opposing carriageway and repeatedly swerving on the road.

Watters crashed into two cars and caused extensive damage, then drove away while the wheels of his own vehicle were damaged.

He admitted to driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

Sheriff Anthony McGeehan highlighted the accused’s decision making on the day of the offences.

He told Watters: “You chose to consume controlled substances and made it worse by choosing to drive under the influence of those controlled substances.

“You put yourself, other drivers, members of the public, and pedestrians under significant risk.

“It came to pass in the form of you colliding with parked cars.

“It is only by the grace of God or good luck that the consequences are not more serious and limited to property and not another driver, pedestrian, or yourself.”

Sheriff McGeehan said Watters’ offences in themselves were serious but were made worse by his 'significant record of road traffic matters'.

He added: “The custody threshold has been met and custody is available to the court but the law says that we must consider an alternative to custody.

“The alternative will reflect the gravity of the offences and punish you.

“There will be a period of supervision which might assist in supporting and assisting with your decision to consume controlled substances.”

The offences took place on Hope Street and Lynedoch Street in Greenock on May 22.

Watters, of Drumfrochar Road in Greenock, was fined £420 and has been disqualified from driving for three years until he resits his test.

He has also been placed under the supervision of social work for 18 months and must complete 200 hours of unpaid work within the same time period.
