A 24-year-old man arrested in connection with the disappearance of university student Libby Squire has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with unrelated offences.

Pawel Relowicz, of Raglan Street, Hull, appeared at Hull Magistrates’ Court accused of voyeurism, outraging public decency and burglary.

He was arrested on suspicion of abduction on Wednesday night in connection with Miss Squire’s disappearance and police said he “remains under investigation”.

On Monday, Relowicz appeared in the dock at the magistrates’ court charged with masturbating in a public place, watching another person “doing a private act” for his own sexual gratification, and stealing vibrators, sex toys, knickers, condoms, photographs and computer equipment from people’s homes.

He entered not guilty pleas to all charges.

Miss Squire, 21, was reported missing on February 1 and an intensive search has been conducted by police since that time.

Relowicz stood in the dock throughout the hearing wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Speaking through a Polish interpreter, he confirmed his name, address, date of birth and not guilty pleas to the five charges.

Members of the media filled the two rows of seats in the public gallery and stood crowded at the back of the courtroom.

Bill Waddington, representing Relowicz, said he would not be making a bail application for his client.

District Judge Fred Rutherford told the defendant: “You have entered your not guilty pleas before this court.

“The matters are too serious for this court and will be sent to Crown Court.

“You are remanded in custody to Hull Crown Court.”

He told Relowicz he would appear at the Crown Court on March 11.

Following Relowicz being charged with the unrelated offences, Detective Superintendent Matt Hutchinson said in a statement: “We are continuing to investigate the disappearance of Libby Squire and a 24-year-old man remains under investigation.

“Our priority remains to find Libby and support her family at this incredibly distressing time.”

The search for University of Hull student Miss Squire, who is originally from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, entered its eleventh day on Monday.

According to police, Miss Squire was seen taking a taxi from a nightclub on the evening of Thursday January 31.

Officers said she was dropped off near her home at around 11.29pm, and was then seen near a bench on Beverley Road around 10 minutes later.

It is understood that police are examining CCTV footage, obtained by ITV News, which shows a man getting in and out of a car minutes after the last sighting of the philosophy student.

In the video, the unidentified man is seen opening the front passenger door and moving around, before getting behind the wheel and driving away at around 12.09am on Friday February 1.

The search for Miss Squire has seen officers scour gardens and alleyways around her home on Wellesley Avenue, and officers have repeatedly looked around the nearby Oak Road playing fields.

Large digital posters displaying the face of the missing student have also been placed around Hull city centre, and university students have been assisting police with their searches.

Officers have also searched a property on Raglan Street.

Detectives have previously said they are continuing to treat her disappearance as a missing persons investigation and are “keeping an open mind” as to her whereabouts.
