Fair Fuel

AS readers will know, I have led the fair fuel campaign for Inverclyde. I have met with BP and more recently Morrisons.

Now that the Competition Markets Authority (CMA) have published their report which does indicate Inverclyde fuel prices were higher, it remains a frustration that Tesco still do not want to engage with me on the issue.

That is up to them, however, it says it all about their attitude to local drivers and the local business community.

Tele readers will know that this week, Morrisons have reduced their fuel prices and they are now 5p per litre cheaper than Tesco. At my recent meeting with Morrisons they did indicate they would be considering their fuel pricing.

Amongst many aspects, I explained our local demographic situation and the importance for many households to have a vehicle.

I clearly welcome this reduction and know it will help local hard-pressed drivers.

Council Tax

Two weeks ago, COSLA and the Scottish Government launched a joint consultation with regards proposals to increase council tax.

This consultation is proposing to raise more finance for local authorities.

Full details of the consultation can be found at https://www.cosla.gov.uk/news/2023/council-tax-consultation.

As you will see when you read the document, the comparison between what we pay in Scotland in comparison to Wales and England is clear. Notwithstanding, I would encourage constituents to engage with this consultation.

House of Lords

These last two weeks have witnessed the unelected House of Lords in all its folly. First of all, a former Special Advisor (SPAD) to the former prime minister, Boris Johnson, was ennobled.

This guarantees a lifetime of payment and privilege for this 30 year old and no chance of her being voted out.

Secondly, an amendment to the UK Government’s Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill was tabled. This amendment would over-ride environmental laws in the Scottish Parliament.

This amendment would also provide the power to change or scrap aspects of environmental law which should be within the remit of the Scottish Parliament.

This is yet another example that the future of the Scottish Parliament is under threat and must be fought all the way. From the cutting of the budget to removing its powers, it’s clear that the only way to safeguard Holyrood and the gains made through devolution is with Holyrood becoming an independent parliament.

From last week's Labour u-turn on the two child limit, otherwise known as the Rape Clause to this weeks House of Lords shenanigans, I have never been stronger in my belief that Scotland can do so much better than what is on offer from Westminster.

Ardgowan Distillery

Finally, congratulations to all the team at the Ardgowan Distillery for a well-attended open day.

Make no mistake, this facility will add to Inverclyde’s tourism offer in addition to making Scotland’s national drink.
