IT never ceases to amaze me the generosity of people at this time of year.

Indeed, Inverclyde’s generosity knows no bounds throughout the year – and that’s year in, year out.

But there’s something extra-special during Christmas and New Year when our community does what it does best and looks out for each other.

Whether it’s the donation of toys and gifts or of food and vouchers for those who are less fortunate, Inverclyde really does care.

I am lucky enough to see some of the many inspirational people and organisations up close in my role as provost.

While there are many charities and organisations out there that will always welcome some extra support, especially at this time of year when demand is high, giving this Christmas doesn’t have to cost a lot.

Arguably the most valuable thing you can donate is your time. That doesn’t cost a penny. Whether it’s checking on an elderly neighbour, visiting a relative you haven’t seen for a while, or catching up with an old friend, spending some time with someone this Christmas could be worth more than anything St Nick can shoehorn onto his sleigh.

It’ll make you feel better about yourself too. And when we’re all tightening our belts (Santa aside), it might save some money.

Spending time with your nearest and dearest and looking out for one another. That’s what Christmas is really all about – and celebrating the birth of the baby Jesus but that goes without saying.

No matter what you do and no matter who you spend it with, I wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas and even happier new year.
