I HOPE all Tele readers have had a peaceful and happy Christmas.

For many of us, of course, it is a much-valued time and opportunity to spend with family, friends, and loved ones.

But we must extend our heartfelt gratitude to those who work to keep us safe during the festive period and indeed all year round.

To our police officers, fire brigade, and armed forces; to our emergency responders; and to our heroic NHS staff working at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and beyond.

And thanks also to our postal workers, delivery drivers, shop workers and many more for everything they do for us during the festive period. And to local journalists who keep us informed all year round.

We should remember also those for whom Christmas is a difficult time, be that emotionally or financially.

2023 has been a year dominated once again by the cost of living crisis. Times are tough for people across Inverclyde – never more so than at this time of year.

Regrettably neither the UK nor Scottish governments have been focused enough this year on the things that matter to people. They have been too distracted by their own political concerns and internal psychodramas.

The people of Inverclyde and beyond deserve better. 2024 is fast approaching and it must be the year when working people who are worried about their bills and the soaring price of everything finally get the change and support they need.

It’s time also to address the NHS backlog to bring down unacceptable wait times for treatment, and to seriously tackle the housing emergency so that all of our people can live in warm and secure homes.

As your MSP I will continue to apply all pressure upon both of our governments to help people through difficult times.

Those with views to share or problems I may be able to help with, please do get in touch so that I can do the best possible job for you that I can.

In the meantime I wish everyone a very happy new year.
