FROM nurseries to job fairs and summer galas, this job doesn’t lack variety.

Mixed with visiting local companies and organisations my summer has been illuminating even without the sunshine. And talking of sunshine it was great to hear such a positive view of the possibilities for Inverclyde at the chamber of commerce event hosted by Concentrix. Hopefully this is a forum where politics and business can work together for a common cause, the rejuvenation of Inverclyde.

Politics and the theatre are old pals and often go hand in glove. With that in mind I was delighted to see that ‘The Cheviot, the Stag and the Black Black Oil’ will be performed at Dundee Rep in September. It would be great if it could be brought to the Beacon too.

Angela Constance MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Life Long Learning, spoke at the Beacon regarding the ‘Attainment Scotland Fund’ and this week the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon reaffirmed her commitment to closing the attainment gap.

She said: “This is a challenge for local government, the Scottish government and society as a whole, and I am determined that my government will show leadership.” This is particularly relevant this week as our local schools start their new term and it is also encouraging to know that the Scottish government continues to invest in education.

The voluntary sector contributes a huge amount to our community. I openly admit that it is only within the last two years or so that I have begun to appreciate the breadth and depth of the services provided by our third sector. It is with that in mind that I unashamedly bring your attention to the British Heart foundation’s ‘Bag It and Beat It’ day on the 29th of August. All donations should be taken to 4 West Blackhall Street.

And finally, on a personal note, may I congratulate Stuart McMillan MSP on his nomination as the SNP candidate for next year’s Holyrood election.

We broke our duck at Westminster last May and I know that Stuart will take nothing for granted in his attempt to replicate that victory next year.
