MORTON’s fifth-place finish in last season’s Championship was worth £211,000 in prize money, the Tele can confirm.

Part of the package of new measures introduced by the SPFL after league reconstruction in 2013 was a significant redistribution of wealth.

In comparison to this season’s figure, placing as runners-up to Partick Thistle in the 2012-13 First Division saw the Ton receive just £67,000.

Jim Duffy’s men went into the final weekend of the campaign just passed with the possibility of finishing in either fifth, sixth or seventh place in the second tier.

A sixth-place finish would have seen club coffers swelled by £189,900 while seventh spot would have earned £179,350, down £21,100 and £31,650 respectively on the figure received for fifth.

It is understood that the SPFL pays out prize money in four instalments over the course of the campaign in order to maintain a steady cash flow to clubs.

The first three instalments are for equal amounts while the fourth and final instalment varies depending on a club’s final league placing.

When contacted by the Tele, a SPFL spokesperson said: “Morton finishing in fifth means £211,000 in prize money.”
